HHS to Host First Nationwide Health Information Network Forum

New York, Jun 05, 2006

On June 28-29, 2006, the first Nationwide Health Information Network Forum will bring together stakeholders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors to identify the critical technical and architectural components needed to advance the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). The forum is hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology—the office responsible for the award and administration of four contracts to support the development of the NHIN.

The forum will provide a platform for the contracted groups—the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP); the Federal Health Architecture; the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology; and consortia developing a prototype architecture for the NHIN—to come together and define the functional requirements necessary to support the secure exchange of electronic healthcare records across the nationwide network. Stakeholders from industry, government, and the non-profit sector interested in shaping the health IT landscape are invited to attend.

The two-day event will be structured as an interactive discussion; attendees will have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions highlighting:

  • specific categories of functional requirements for the NHIN, including security, information location, and data transmission
  • core system components and requirements for applications that will participate in the exchange of health information technology
The functional requirements will help to establish compliance criteria for electronic health records and provide a framework for the HITSP in defining implementation level guidance for NHIN specifications. The panel, which was established by the American National Standards Institute in September 2005, is expected to approve a list of standards that will support interoperability specifications for the NHIN at its upcoming meeting later this month.

The NHIN forum will be held June 28-29 at the National Institute of Health's Natcher Conference Center in Bethesda, MD, and is open to the public. Registration for the event closes June 21, 2006.
