Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: From Electric Sign Components to Fan Balance and Vibration

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, ANSI Online will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Electric Sign Components
The buzzing Budweiser beer sign and the flashing NO VACANCY sign at the local motel may have different messages, but they both adhere to guidelines that support their operation. Electric signs like these can take all shapes and sizes and communicate any number of messages to the world, but many of them will be affected by a standard from Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.

ANSI/UL 879-2005, Electric Sign Components, covers electromechanical components that convey a message or outline the structural features of a building involving all forms of illumination. Components covered by this standard include fluorescent lighting, high intensity discharge (HID) lighting, neon lighting, cold cathode lighting, light emitting diodes (LED), and electroluminescent lighting.

Fan Balance and Vibration
In the heat of summer we rely on any number of devices designed to move air throughout rooms and buildings to help keep temperatures down. Air-conditioners, ventilation equipment, power generation equipment and even simple table fans all rely on precise movement and alignment to function properly. The Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) is an ANSI member and accredited standards developer that has produced many standards affecting fans.

AMCA Standard 204, Balance Quality and Vibration Levels for Fans, is currently under revision and available for public comment. The purpose of the standard is to define appropriate fan balance quality and operating vibration levels to individuals who specify, manufacture, use and maintain fans. AMCA also operates a Certified Rating Program to provide assurance that the manufacturers' published performance data on air system devices have been tested and verified.
