ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New ISO Field of Activity on Electoral Administration

8/04/2014
INTECO, Costa Rica's member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has submitted a proposal to ISO for a new field of technical activity on electoral administration. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by Friday, September 12, 2014.

According to the proposal, the new field of technical activity would focus on standardization work in connection with electoral administration, including the registration of electors, political groups, and candidates, vote casting, the declaration of election results, methodologies for electoral observation, and other related topics. The field of activity is also expected to include the revision of ISO Technical Specification (TS) 17582, Quality management systems -- Particular requirements for the application of ISO 9001:2008 for electoral organizations at all levels of government, and its subsequent approval as an International Standard.

All comments on this proposal should be sent to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy ([email protected]). Feedback received by the September 12 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comment, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council for formal approval.

The full proposal filed by INTECO is available online.
