October 20 ANSI Cities Network Webinar Covers ISO Strategic Advisory Group on Smart Cities

On October 20, from 12 noon to 1 pm EDT, the monthly webinar of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC) will feature a report on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Management Board (TMB) Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) on smart cities. Dave Welsh from Microsoft’s corporate standards office — one of the U.S. experts on the SAG — will be the featured speaker.

The ISO TMB SAG on smart cities was chartered to help define the ISO strategic direction on smart and sustainable city standardization including options for ISO’s relationships with other international organizations on smart cities. The SAG’s work included surveying cities, associations, and technical committees on needed standards and perspectives. The SAG recently submitted its report to the TMB outlining several recommendations including the development of a strategic work programme on smart cities and improving engagement with other SDOs, city leaders, and market stakeholders.

Dave Welsh has been at Microsoft Corporation for more than 12 years and covers the company’s global policy on a variety of standards agendas including smart cities and internet of things (IoT). Mr. Welsh works with Microsoft development teams on new cloud services as well as Microsoft’s field operations globally. Educated at Concordia University Center for Building Studies (Montreal) and the Technical University of Eindhoven, Department of Architecture (The Netherlands), Mr. Welsh specialized in computer aided architectural and building design. He has been both an engineer and manager in different countries across a variety of industry domains including buildings and construction, transportation, international trade logistics, manufacturing, and online retail.

Mr. Welsh has also been active for many years with different international, U.S., and European standards organizations on a wide range of topics. He has co-authored ISO standards, chaired different technical committees, and was the United Nations standards rapporteur within its Center for Trade Facilitation. Currently, he is chair of the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Subcommittee (SC) 7, Software and system engineering, and is also very involved with a number of consortia on smart cities and IoT.

Participation in the October webinar is open to individuals who have joined the ANSSC, a forum for information sharing among members of the standardization community, representatives of local governments, and experts in sustainable urban infrastructure planning and development.
