ANSI and the HITSP Support National Health IT Week

New York, Apr 26, 2006

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) will participate in the first annual National Health IT Week—a collaborative forum of public and private sector organizations to foster the widespread adoption of health information technology (IT). National Health IT Week will take place June 5-8, 2006, in Washington, DC.

The Institute serves on the steering committee, and the HITSP serves as co-sponsor of National Health IT Week. Together, they are promoting improved healthcare efficiency, quality, cost effectiveness and patient safety in the U.S.

National Health IT Week is expected to draw more than 2,500 industry, healthcare, and health consumer representatives. The focal point of the week, National Health IT Day, will feature an opening keynote presentation by Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and founder of the Center for Health Transformation. Additional keynote addresses will be delivered by Dr. Carolyn Clancy, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), and Myrl Weinberg, president of the National Health Council.

The week’s events will also feature independently planned and hosted conferences, including the 2006 AHRQ Annual Conference on Patient Safety & Health IT, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Summit 2006, and the 5th Annual HIMSS Advocacy Days.

ANSI established the HITSP under a contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to assist in the development of the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN)—President George W. Bush’s initiative to establish the widespread adoption of electronic healthcare records within ten years. The panel works to achieve a set of consensus-based standards that will support the interoperability, privacy and security of a nationwide healthcare system.
