ANSI to Host Administration Leaders for Meeting on Public-Private Collaboration

New York , Apr 08, 2010

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a discussion with leaders of the government’s newly formed National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Subcommittee on Standards on public sector engagement in standardization. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 13, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m, during ANSI’s scheduled Company Member Forum at the Consumer Electronics Association in Arlington, Virginia.

Scheduled to speak at the event are:

  • Aneesh Chopra, U.S. Chief Technology Officer

  • Pat Gallagher, Director, National Institute of Standards and Technology

  • Phil Weiser, Senior Advisor to the National Economic Council Director for Technology and Innovation

This meeting will provide the opportunity for ANSI members and other interested stakeholders to hear first hand from key leaders in the new administration, and to share their insights about the critical role that standards and conformity assessment have to play in meeting key national priorities.

Those interested in attending the meeting may do so by webinar or in person. To register for the webinar, please visit https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/456205017. In-person attendees should note that space is limited and attendance may be limited to standing room only.

The NSTC Subcommittee on Standards was established in March 2010 by Mr. Chopra along with Vivek Kundra, U.S. Chief Information Officer, and Cass Sunstein, Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. The Subcommittee is co-chaired by Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Weiser.

According to a whitehouse.gov blog posting by Mr. Chopra, “This interagency group will provide high-level leadership so federal agencies are strategically focused and actively engaged on critical standards-related issues. The improved coordination will, in turn, ensure that agencies can work in a responsive and timely fashion with the private sector so that effective standards are developed and put into practice to meet the Nation’s needs.”

The posting continues: “The Obama Administration is committed to working in close partnership with industry, standards organizations, and the public to ensure that the technologies needed to address the urgent challenges facing our country are developed and made in the United States and are appropriately interoperable with related technologies. … Technical standards play a major role in this effort, and this Subcommittee is an important step in ensuring that federal agencies collaborate effectively with the private sector to make it happen.”

As the coordinator of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, ANSI is hosting this meeting to provide the forum through which this type of discussion and collaboration between the public and private sectors can take place. All members and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to participate, either in person or via webinar.
