ANSI Announces First Workshop under the U.S.-Africa Clean Energy Standards Program

5/02/2016

On May 16, 2016, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will hold the Electrical Safety for Clean Energy Systems Workshop in Cape Town, South Africa. The workshop is the first of a series that ANSI will organize under the U.S.-Africa Clean Energy Standards Program (CESP), which is sponsored by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and in partnership with Power Africa.

Safe generation, transmission, distribution, management, and use of electricity depend on an interlocking web of technical rules such as installation codes and product standards, proper testing and verification, and application of best practices in the home and in the workplace. The Electrical Safety for Clean Energy Systems Workshop will cover these fundamental components of a safe electrical system, and feature presentations by ANSI member the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). To register for this event, please email [email protected].

The workshop is one of several energy industry events taking place in Cape Town from May 16-19. Power Africa has planned several additional activities on May 16, including a workshop on currency risk and power financing. Participants in the Electrical Safety for Clean Energy Systems Workshop will also have the opportunity to attend African Utility Week (AUW) , which takes place May 17-19.

The AUW conference and expo is the largest global meeting place for African utilities. In its 16th consecutive year, it has established itself as the largest power and water utilities exhibition and conference on the African continent offering valuable business opportunities for utilities, municipalities, governments, regulators, large power users, and solution providers. 250 exhibitors from the international power and waterindustry will be on hand, representing the largest display of engineering technology for these sectors on the African continent.

Looking ahead, ANSI will organize another three workshops under the U.S.-Africa CESP this year. Each workshop will take place in Sub-Saharan Africa and focus on standards-related issues in the clean energy space. Based on initial interest in the program, ANSI is currently exploring the possibility of organizing workshops covering solar, energy storage, and smart metering. ANSI members interested in any of these potential workshop topics are invited to contact [email protected] to learn more. For additional information on the program and the opportunity to propose other workshop topics, please visit the U.S.-Africa CESP website.
