Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative to Convene March 1

U.S. electricity demand is expected to increase as much as 28% by 2035. Because of its enormous potential as a large-scale source of clean energy, nuclear power has become a key element of the U.S. energy strategy as a long-term solution to ensuring energy supply, security, and grid reliability.

Taking the next step toward the widespread commercialization of the U.S. nuclear industry, the Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC) will convene on March 1 to advance standards work in this area. A joint initiative of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), the NESCC works to identify the standards needed for the design, operation, development, licensing, and deployment of nuclear power plants and other nuclear technologies. The NESCC is open to all stakeholders, government legislative and regulatory bodies, industry, standards developing organizations, certification organizations, and other interested parties.

The March 1 NESCC meeting will focus on standards to support the structural repair of existing nuclear reactors. Discussions will center on nuclear plant cable aging management, cable performance challenges, the IEEE Nuclear Standards Qualification Process for aging and performance of cables, and an assessment of relevant American National Standards (ANS). The NESCC meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at NIST Headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD. Attendance is open to all stakeholders and free of charge, but advance registration is required by February 20 for both in-person and teleconference participants.
