Celebrate the Summer! July is National Recreation and Parks Month

New York, Jul 16, 2008

Lace up your sneakers and jog to the nearest park: July is National Recreation and Parks Month! With standards to help ensure that everything from sporting equipment to public recreational facilities is safe for the whole family, outdoor sports and recreational activities are a great way to get some exercise and have fun at the same time.

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) offers a calendar of suggestions for outdoor activities during the month of July. One activity they propose is a family game of golf. While older family members may be perfecting their swing, younger ones might prefer the novelty of riding in a golf cart. An American National Standard developed by the National Golf Car Manufacturers Association (NGCMA), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ensures a safe ride. ANSI/NGCMA Z130.1-2004, Golf Cars - Safety and Performance Specifications provides safety and performance specifications relating to golf cars specifically intended for and used on golf courses for transporting golfers and their equipment.

Another family favorite for hot summer days is taking a dip in the pool. Public pools are covered by an American National Standard created by ANSI member and accredited standards developer the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals. Providing guidelines for conventional pools, pools for competition, and wading pools, ANSI/NSPI 1-2003, Public Swimming Pools ensures the safety of swimmers of all sizes.

For a more adventurous activity during the warm summer months, many choose to go camping. Bug spray, hot dogs, and sleeping bags are all great items to bring along, but the first thing every camper needs is a tent. A standard created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 5912:2003, Camping tents, specifies the requirements on safety, performance and fitness for use of camping tents.

Whether camping, swimming, playing golf, or just taking a stroll, the summer is a great time to take advantage of public parks. Visit the NRPA website for more information on national parks and recreation, both in July and all year long.
