ANSI - American National Standards Institute

ANSI-Accredited U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnologies

U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAG) formulate positions and proposals on behalf of the United States with response to ISO standardization activities. The U.S. TAGs also provide the delegates and experts who represent the United States at meetings of the respective ISO Technical Committees, Subcommittees and Working Groups.

Scope of ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnologies

Standardization in the field of nanotechnologies that includes either or both of the following:

  • Understanding and control of matter and processes at the nanoscale, typically, but not exclusively, below 100 nanometers in one or more dimensions where the onset of size-dependent phenomena usually enables novel applications
  • Utilizing the properties of nanoscale materials that differ from the properties of individual atoms, molecules, and bulk matter to create improved materials, devices, and systems that exploit these new properties

Specific tasks include developing standards for: terminology and nomenclature; metrology and instrumentation, including specifications for reference materials; test methodologies; modelling and simulations; and science-based health, safety, and environmental practices.

ANSI administers the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnologies. The Scope of the U.S. TAG mirrors the above scope of ISO/TC 229.

TAG Membership

Membership on the ANSI-Accredited U.S. TAG is open to all materially affected U.S. parties interested in the coordination and development of International Standards related to nanotechnology

Organizational Structure

Four Working Groups (WG) currently operate under ISO/TC 229 Nanotechnologies:

Consistent with the structure selected at the ISO level, the ANSI-Accredited U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 229 mirrors the Technical Committee’s Working Group structure:

  • TAG WGs are advisory to the full U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 229
  • The full U.S. TAG retains final decision making authority on all U.S. positions and ballots

U.S. TAG Officers:

Chair of the U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 229

Dr. Ajit Jillavenkatesa

National Institute of Standards and Technology

TAG Working Group Chairs:

TAG Working Group 1: Terminology and Nomenclature

Dr. Scott Brown, Chemours, representing the American Chemistry Council

TAG Working Group 2: Measurement and Characterization

Dr. Jiwen Zheng, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

TAG Working Group 3: Health, Safety and Environment

Dr. Richard Pleus, Intertox

TAG Working Group 4: Materials Specifications

Dr. David Ensor, IEST

TAG Working Group 5: Products and applications

Dr. Jay West, American Chemistry Council
