Standards Organizations Open Access to Standards and Resources to Support COVID-19 Response

4/06/2020

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has opened access to standards at no charge to help the public and industry organizations respond to the COVID-19 global health pandemic, and its effects on global health and safety, research, infrastructure, communications, and more. IEEE has provided access to medical device/equipment related standards and 3D printing relevant standards.

Standards are available on the IEEE Xplore digital library, meant to help researchers understand and manage different aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic and technologies that can be leveraged to combat the virus, the company reports. Find out more information on the IEEE home page or IEEE COVID-19.

IEEE joins ANSI members and accredited standards developers AAMI and ASTM international, who have also provided access to standards and resources to help speed response to the COVID-19 crisis:

AFNOR, BSI, DIN, among others are opening access to European standards.

In response to the European Commission's request, and in association with CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, and CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, BSI has made a series of European Standards (ENs) for medical devices and personal protective equipment (PPE) used in the context of the current COVID-19 outbreak available without charge on its website. Also in response to the request, AFNOR, the French national organization for standardization, is also offering 11 standards free to access on its AFNOR publishing website.

Similarly, DIN, the German national organization for standardization also recently announced that it has made access to medical equipment standards available free of charge until further notice. See the DIN press release with further details.

To Support COVID-19 Response, ANSI Launches Portal for Freely Available ISO and IEC Standards

The ANSI portal, Freely Available ISO and IEC Standards to Help Address COVID-19 Crisis, now includes 36 international standards covering medical equipment and devices - including ventilators and respiratory equipment; protective clothing used in health care settings; and business continuity management, security, and resilience. ANSI is the coordinator of the U.S. voluntary consensus standardization system and the U.S. member body to ISO and the IEC.

To access the recently launched portal, users must accept the license agreement and register. Once registered, users can return to the portal via https://asc.ansi.org.
