World Standards Cooperation Names Winning Poster Design, Emphasizing the Importance of Protecting the Planet with Standards

8/24/2020

Recently, the World Standards Cooperation (WSC) announced the winning design of its 2020 World Standards Day poster competition, reflecting the theme: "Protecting the Planet with Standards." Jyoti Bisht of India designed the poster, which was selected from over 400 submissions, by public vote. The annual competition is co-organized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is intended to raise awareness about the importance of standards in daily life.

The winning poster exemplifies how standards help preserve nature and the environment on a global scale. The WSC asked contestants to consider and illustrate how the broad use of standards helps reduce the environmental impact of industrial production and processes, facilitates the reuse of limited resources, and improves energy efficiency.

"In my poster I created a wide variety of modern utilities such as electric cars, marine life, alternate sources of energy, and many more, all of which leave little to zero footprint on our planet when they are used by us, because they comply with international standards," said Bisht. "Thus, I wanted to send out a message that by using such products which follow international standards we can protect our planet from irreversible damage such as through carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. The whole idea is to make viewers aware of wide variety of utilities in our day to day life that use international standards to protect our planet."

The two runners-up included Avishek Sahoo from India and Mohsen Jafari from the Islamic Republic of Iran. See the full-size winning poster and a Q&A with Bist and the runners-up on the official World Standards Cooperation page.

About World Standards Day

World Standards Day was initially launched in 1970, and is now celebrated by nations around the globe.

To protect the health, safety, and well-being of ANSI's members, constituents, attendees, and staff, the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD) exhibits, reception, and dinner - co-chaired by ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and traditionally scheduled during World Standards Week - will not be held in 2020. WSD 2021 will be celebrated on October 28, 2021, in Washington, DC, with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) serving as the 2021 WSD administrating organization.
