ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New ISO Standard on Consumer Incident Investigations

2/18/2020

Submit Comments by March 27, 2020

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) seeks comments on a proposed new International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard focusing on investigations of consumer incidents. As the U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI requests that all interested U.S. parties review the proposal and submit comments by March 27, 2020.

ISO COPOLCO, the ISO policy committee on consumer interests, submitted the proposal for a new ISO standard on Consumer Incident Investigation Guideline, to provide a general guide for investigations of consumer incidents.

As the scope statement explains, consumer incidents occur when consumers suffer physical injury or death in the process of using products, services, facilities, or the things related to them. A "consumer incident investigation" is an investigation aiming to prevent incident recurrence, and to contribute to the safety of consumers.

This document is intended to be beneficial to persons, groups, committees, or organizations of all types, such as private, public, and non-profit bodies, regardless of the size of the organization that is investigating consumer incidents.

Please review the proposal and submit comments to Steve Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy, at [email protected], by close of business on March, 27, 2020.

Based on the input received from U.S. stakeholders, a recommended ANSI position and any comments will be developed and presented to the ANSI ISO Committee (AIC) for approval before ISO's voting deadline of May 6, 2020.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
