Join an International Workshop: Gap Analysis for Standardization on Sustainable and Human-centered Societies Enabled with Cyber Physical Systems

11/23/2020

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages interested stakeholders to join a workshop to develop an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) International Workshop Agreement (IWA) on the topic, “Gap Analysis for Standardization on Sustainable and Human-centered Societies Enabled with Cyber Physical Systems.” The online virtual IWA workshop will take place on February 10 and 11, 2020. Register by January 8, 2020.

According to the invitation, issued by the ISO Technical Management Board, which approved the IWA proposal from the Japan Industrial Standards Committee (JISC), a Cyber Physical System (CPS) is "a system which collects inputs from physical processes through means such as sensor networks, [and] analyzes the data and gives feedback to physical processes, affecting their future status." A human centered society is "an inclusive society where diverse people can enjoy a high quality of life that is fully active and comfortable and meeting various needs of people including accessibility needs, regardless of region, age, sex, language, etc. by providing necessary items and services."

The IWA is intended to conduct an analysis on how sustainable and human centered society are, or can be, enabled with CPS. By mapping relevant activities conducted by standard developing organizations and technical committees and subcommittees, and discussing scenarios for the future society, stakeholders will be better able to identify gaps for the needs of global harmonization.

Cyber Physical Systems

Cyber Physical Systems can integrate sensing, computation, control, and networking into physical objects and infrastructure, connecting them to the Internet and to each other. These systems support the smart grid, autonomous automobile systems, medical monitoring, robotics, and industrial systems, among other system sectors. As the world faces a pandemic, CPS integration into our society has accelerated.

According to JISC’s original proposal for the IWA, as CPS is more integrated into society and has direct impacts on the general public at a global level, it is an urgent necessity to discuss the potential of international standardization. Multiple standard development organizations, international forums, and initiatives have already launched relevant activities on the issue. However, no comprehensive big picture is currently available clearly outlining those activities and their relationships.

More on the IWA Process

An IWA is a type of document that is developed with direct participation of stakeholders outside of the traditional ISO country representation system to enable participants to negotiate in an open workshop environment. After the IWA workshop, text will be edited and published.
