ANSI Meets Virtually with Standardization Administration of China to Discuss Standards Strategies

12/18/2020

As the U.S. and China are both updating their national standards strategies this year, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recently held a virtual meeting with leadership from the Chinese national standards body, the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), as part of their longstanding bilateral engagement. ANSI president and CEO Joe Bhatia, along with ANSI vice president for international policy Joseph Tretler and ANSI International Policy Advisory Group (IPAG) chair Phil Piqueira, attended and met with the SAC delegation, led by SAC Administrator and vice minister of the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), Dr. Tian Shihong.

During the November 23 meeting, ANSI and SAC leadership provided updates on the changes to their respective country’s standards strategy. SAC presented on the China Standardization Strategy that stems from the research project, “China Standards 2035,” which aims to improve the consistency of Chinese standards, advocates the principle of one standard, one review, and global recognition. SAC also indicated its intention to collaborate on standardization on 5G, AI, and other emerging technologies.

The presentation on the Chinese standardization strategy is available to ANSI members and is accessible online.

Representatives from ANSI outlined key comments that stakeholders have made to the United States Standardization Strategy (USSS), during its 2020 revision. The updated USSS will be published in early 2021. ANSI shared perspectives and recommended next steps for China to take as it moves forward in its standardization reform process. ANSI's Joe Bhatia noted, “ANSI values its relationship and cooperation with SAC, especially as both countries are currently updating their standards strategies. We will continue to keep our relationship strong.”
