A Look at ISO Strategy 2030

2/23/2021

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has released ISO Strategy 2030, which establishes the organization's vision and mission to make lives easier, safer, and bettersupported by a set of actionable goals and priorities. A collaborative effort, members from 165 countries contributed to the development, refinement, and approval of the foundational guiding document, including U.S. stakeholder input submitted to ISO via the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) ISO Council.

ISO reports that the strategy has identified four "primary drivers of change" as areas which International Standards have the most impact and relevance in the world: the economy, technology, society, and the environment. The strategy incorporates ISO's six priority actions to achieve its goals and maximize its impact within the context of these drivers of change:

  • Goal 2: Meeting Global Needs
    • Priority 2.1: Deliver market standards when the market needs them
    • Priority 2.2: Capture future opportunities for international standardization
  • Goal 3: All Voices Heard
    • Priority 3.1: Strengthen ISO members through capacity building
    • Priority 3.2: Advance inclusivity and diversity in the ISO system

By looking ahead to 2030, the strategy enables enables ISO to adopt a long-term approach to global issues whose scale "cannot be realistically addressed" in a five-year period. ISO Strategy 2030 also provides an opportunity for ISO to commit to a consistent focus to the evolution of the standardization system itself, the organization reports.

In an announcement of the ISO Strategy 2030 release, ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica described the strategy as “a remarkable achievement in collaborative working that demonstrates our commitment to a long-term approach and the 2030 Agenda, and reflects our DNA as an organization built on consensus and progress.”

Last month, ANSI, the coordinator of the U.S. voluntary standardization system, announced the release of the updated United States Standards Strategy (USSS), which describes the principles and tactics that guide how the United States develops standards and participates in the international standards-setting process.

The guiding document is updated every five years to assure that it continues to meet the needs of diverse U.S. interests and that it reflects technological advancements, industry growth areas, national and international priorities, and updates to relevant U.S. government policy. The USSS details 12 strategic initiatives that can be implemented by diverse stakeholders to meet their objectives.
