ANSI Delegation Attends 2025 Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) Annual Meeting in Japan

6/02/2025

A delegation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) attended the 47th Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) Annual Meeting from May 19-21 in Tokyo, Japan. This event brought together representatives from national standards bodies, international organizations, and industry leaders to discuss and advance standardization efforts in the region. The 13th Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Forum (APCF) for the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was also hosted at the same time.

Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Katharine Fraga Pearson, IEC director of membership, affiliates, and capacity building, and Akihiro Kato, coordination advisor of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), presented strategies and latest developments from their organizations. They also shared their experiences with digital transformations, including Online Standards Development (OSD), IEC/ISO SMART, ISO AI Framework, IEC White Label, and other digital tools and initiatives.

PASC members, including Australia, Canada, China, Korea, and Singapore, emphasized their efforts to strengthen regional collaboration, address domestic needs, and enhance the accessibility and implementation of international standards. Representatives from PASC partner organizations—the Pacific Island Standards Committee (PISC) and the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT)—also provided updates on recent activities and capacity-building programs.

As the host country, Japan’s delegation shared strategic visions on standards and innovation focusing on patent utilization and the integration of electro-cyber-physical systems to meet their net zero goal.

PASC members also exchanged support requests for the leadership election and proposed projects for ISO/IEC/ITU-T, reviewed the annual reports from each working group, and discussed the drafting of the PASC Strategic Plan 2026–2030, as well as plans for future general meetings.

As the U.S. representative to PASC, ANSI is committed to fostering regional collaboration within the PASC framework. ANSI actively contributes to the organization’s work by leading and participating in various working groups, promoting alignment on international standards, and supporting capacity-building and information-sharing initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region.
