New Workcred Blog: Different Approaches to Integrate Microcredentials into Undergraduate Degrees

6/27/2025

A new article authored by Workcred's Karen Elzey, associate executive director, examines how Workcred collaborated with The University of Texas System (UT System) to develop four case studies that provide examples of multiple approaches for integrating microcredentials into undergraduate programs at UT System’s institutions.

“Microcredentials are used to meet a variety of needs that range from rounding out and enriching a degree program, fostering persistence and retention, demonstrating competency in technical skills, to enhancing employability outcomes,” Elzey wrote. “Thus, they are well-suited to be responsive to skills needed in the labor market, able to be developed quickly, and can support innovation.”

The case studies detail the different microcredential integration approaches:

  • UT San Antonio pairs Google Project Management Professional Certificates with humanities courses
  • UT Arlington offers Google Professional Certificates as co-curricular microcredential options for all students through their "Power Up + Tech Up" program
  • UT Dallas created four data science microcredentials in Behavioral Research Methods, Biobehavioral Data Science, User Experience Research, and Neural Net Math to enhance psychology and cognitive science degrees
  • UT San Antonio integrates Google Professional Cybersecurity certificates into cybersecurity coursework to address employer skill gaps
