GS1 Collaborates with Industry and Government to Improve Food Traceability

8/14/2020

GS1, an ANSI member, has announced that it is collaborating with the FDA in its new initiative to promote a safe and visible food supply chain.

The “New Era of Smarter Food Safety” FDA initiative centers on a blueprint outlining four foundational components that can help create a more digital, traceable, and safer food system:

  • Standardization of critical tracking events and key data elements that help the food system use consistent traceability language
  • Use of existing consensus standards where possible to enable industry compliance with the FDA’s traceability regulation
  • Promotion of and participation in governance and harmonization with U.S. and international regulatory counterparts through bodies such as GS1 and Codex
  • Work with standards bodies, technology providers, and users to promote interoperability, ensuring systems that can work together as a foundational component

GS1 has been working with the FDA and industry to support this initiative and the use of GS1 standards to digitize the supply chain. Learn more about their involvement in GS1’s news item.
