A recent article published by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) discusses the risks of scanning QR codes from unknown sources, following a commercial during the Super Bowl that had millions scanning a QR code on their TV screens.
QR codes can be used as an attack vector, and the use of malicious codes has risen significantly in recent months. Hackers may replace a legitimate QR code with a malicious one, redirecting users to a fake website where they’re asked to enter sensitive information like passwords. Other malicious QR codes can lead a device to download ransomware or even perform financial transactions with a banking app.
