A new feature published in Mechanical Engineering, the magazine of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), sheds light on the earnings potential of mechanical engineers (MEs) across the U.S. and reveals that location plays a substantial difference in their salaries.

The article compares state-by-state earnings of MEs, finding:

  • The annual mean wage across all MEs was $105,220 (U.S. Bureau of Labor).
  • Professionals who work in New Mexico earn the most in the nation ($129,000), followed by California and Massachusetts.
  • Michigan has the most employed MEs in the U.S.
  • Although MEs work across a wide range of industries, the professional services segment has one of the highest levels of employment.
