NISO Executive Director Speaks on Content Accessibility and Equitable Access

11/26/2024

Todd Carpenter, executive director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), recently authored an article on accessibility as a critical element of open access content.

“Paywalls are Not the Only Barriers to Access: Accessibility is Critical to Equitable Access” explores the progress toward a more open ecosystem of federally-funded content, highlighting the comparative lack of attention to the accessibility of content.

“Content that is inaccessible is no more open to those who need supportive reading functionality than content that is behind a paywall. Access without accessibility doesn’t serve the goal of providing federally funded resources to the public,” notes Carpenter.

The article highlights tools that support accessibility of content, and outlines relevant new regulations that are coming into effect.
