Following the release of its free e-book titled 4 Steps to Hiring and Retaining the Best Workers, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) has released a summary of tips that will help employers get ahead of the curve when it comes to attracting and retaining top talent.

Tips were inspired by a session held at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 by Dr. Larry Kokkelenberg, who has been researching, designing, developing, and delivering training programs for 40 years. The guidance is focused on four main themes: getting in front of the right people, conducting effective interviews, providing effective onboarding, and retaining staff year-round. Among the tips:

• Referral bonuses are effective, when approached the right way, and especially if they are a “significant amount.” However, companies can play it smart and include stipulations; for example, someone comes on and stays for at least six months before the referral fee is paid.
• Utilize several channels. Find and connect with industry partners to get into the talent pool, and don’t miss out on veteran recruits.
• Use social media by highlighting positive experiences of current employees, posting about sign-on bonuses, etc. to showcase all the company has to offer, and entice potential employees.
• Don’t miss out on summer interns, who fill full-time jobs once they graduate, and can spread the word about your company culture and offerings.
