American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

John W. Landis, served as president of ANSI Board from 1975 to 1977. A specialist in nuclear engineering, he was president of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), and worked for many years in voluntary standards development for the energy industry. He served ANSI as its director, its chair, chair of its Nuclear Standards Board and its Nuclear Standards Policy Committee.

Mr. Landis retired from his position as senior vice president and director of Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation. During his long career, he has served as chair of the Public Safety Standards Group, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, past-president and Fellow of the American Nuclear Society, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and president of General Atomics and Stone & Webster International. He has also served on twenty-seven government advisory committees.

The recipient of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Exceptional Public Service Award, and of numerous other accolades, John W. Landis was awarded ANSI's Howard Coonley Medal in 1991 in recognition of his service to the nation as the driving force behind the development of consensus standards for the application and regulation of nuclear power.
