The Online Standards Development (OSD) platform, developed by ISO and IEC, aims to replace the Word-based standards development with a unique, harmonized and collaborative space for all contributors from the preparatory stage through to publication. The platform helps standards developers create complex structured content, based on XML, right from the start. This not only facilitates editorial processing, but also enables better content quality at earlier stages of the development process.

The IEC SMB (SMB Decision 180/4) and ISO TMB (TMB Resolution 68/2024) approved the OSD as the default choice for the development starting in 2025. The default approach means all committees begin new projects and revisions within the OSD unless an exemption request is submitted to use the traditional word-based template.
