U.S. ISO Critical Minerals Standards Coordination Group (ICMSCG)

Background

Critical minerals are essential to a wide range of technologies that underpin modern economies, from renewable energy systems and advanced manufacturing to defense applications and digital infrastructure. As demand for these materials grows, international standards play a vital role in promoting transparency, traceability, sustainability, and security across global supply chains. Standards provide common frameworks for responsible sourcing, environmental and social safeguards, measurement and testing methods, and data interoperability, enabling governments, industry, and stakeholders to work together more effectively. By supporting innovation, reducing risks, and fostering global alignment, standards help ensure that critical minerals are developed and used in ways that advance economic resilience, energy transition goals, and long-term sustainability.

Overview

The U.S. ISO Critical Minerals Standards Coordination Group (ICMSCG) serves as a collaborative forum for U.S. stakeholders to exchange information, coordinate engagement, and align strategically on ISO activities related to critical minerals. It provides a neutral platform to share updates on standards development actions, committee activities, and upcoming ISO meetings across relevant technical committees. Strengthening domestic coordination will help assure sustained U.S. representation and influence in ISO standardization activities related to critical minerals.

The ICMSCG convenes quarterly virtual meetings of U.S. TAG members to foster strategic dialogue, strengthen alignment of U.S. positions, identify opportunities for participation and leadership in ISO standards work. Through these coordinated efforts, the group advances shared objectives in standardization to enhance the security, sustainability, and innovation of critical minerals supply chains.

Formally kicked off in October 2025, the ICMSCG membership is limited to members of the U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) in the relevant ISO committees.
