Mary C. McKiel, Ph.D., is president of The McKiel Group and the former standards executive with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington, D.C. The McKiel Group is dedicated to helping private sector organizations be more effective and productive in working with government in the areas of standardization and conformity assessment.

From 1993 through 2013, Dr. McKiel directed EPA’s implementation of the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act and OMB Circular A-119, “Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards and in Conformity Assessment

Activities”. She established standards-related policies for the agency, and actively promoted EPA use of voluntary standards as well as the agency’s participation in standards developing organizations. While at EPA she was honored with bronze, silver and gold medals for her standards work. She also represented the agency in various domestic and international standards organizations arenas in both the public and private sectors including the American National Standards Institute, ASTM International, Underwriters Laboratories, the Pacifica Area Standards Congress, ISO committees and work groups, and the United Nations Work Group on Regulatory Practices in Standards.

In 2001 Dr. McKiel was elected to serve her first term as a vice-chair of the ANSI Board of Directors; she has also served in various capacities within ANSI, including three separate terms as chair of ANSI’s Government Member Council. In 2008, she was awarded the ANSI George S. Wham Leadership Medal for her contributions to standardization, and in 2014, she was given the ANSI Astin-Polk International Standards Medal. She also received the Leo B. Moore medal from the Society for Standards Professionals for achievement, service and contributions in the field of standardization in 2010. In 2013 Dr. McKiel served as the Board of Directors Chair for ASTM International, an ANSI member.

Dr. McKiel has also led a number of other note-worthy initiatives of importance to US stakeholders, including serving as the Chair of the US/TAG for the ISO Working Group on Social Responsibility (developing ISO 26000), Vice Chair of the US/TAG for the ISO Technical Committee 207 on Environmental Management Systems and the ANSI principal delegate to the ISO/TMB group developing ISO Guide 82 on addressing sustainability aspects in ISO standards.

Dr. McKiel has written about the federal use of nongovernment standards for a wide variety of governmental and private sector publications worldwide and has delivered presentations in person and via television to both national and international audiences. Born in Chicago, Dr. McKiel currently resides in Arnold, Maryland. She earned a PhD in chemistry from the American University in Washington, D.C. and Bachelor of Arts degrees in chemistry and English literature.
