Anthony R. O’Neill was elected Chairman of the American National Standards Institute in 1992, served on its Board for 11 years including Chairman of the Finance Committee, Blue Ribbon Panel, member of the ANSI Presidential Search Committee and Strategic Planning Committee. He was awarded the George C. Wham Leadership Medal by ANSI in 1998 for his commitment to voluntary standardization.

Mr. O’Neill began his career in Fire Safety at the Travelers Insurance Company in charge of Fire Protection safety in the Engineering and Loss Control Division supervising headquarters’ staff and field specialists in fire inspection consultation for property and casualty insurance customers. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Travelers Corporation in the late 1960’s.

Mr. O’Neill came to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) originally to establish a Washington Office in 1971, after which he moved to NFPA’s Massachusetts’ headquarters where he was appointed Assistant Secretary of NFPA and served as Vice President of Operations. He developed and administered many of the programs which have expanded the Association’s role and influence in fire safety.

Mr. O’Neill has served on numerous boards and committees at national, state and local levels. He has been a guest speaker both at home and abroad on a wide range of fire safety related topics. Mr. O’Neill also led the first fire equipment technology trade mission to China in 1982 which led to the adoption of NFPA/ANSI standards for that country’s modernization.

Mr. O’Neill is past Chairman of the Congressional Fire Safety Institute’s (CFSI) Advisory Committee and was named Congressional Fire Services Person of the Year in 1997. He served as Vice Chair of the Fire Detection Institute, as a Member of the Fire Safety Advisory Board of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and as a Member, Fire Research Advisory Panel, National Institute, Standards and Technology (NIST).

In 1990, Mr. O’Neill was a founding member of the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) which certifies Fire and Emergency Services Personnel to NFPA/ANSI Professional Qualifications’ Standards. He has served as its Secretary-Treasurer since its beginning.
