On behalf of Ms. Sonya M. Bird, Mr. Robert Williams (left) accepts the 2011 Meritorious Service Award, which he received from Mr. Art Cote, Chairman of the ANSI Board of Directors.

Sonya M. Bird, program manager, international standards, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), is responsible for coordinating UL's international and regional harmonization standards development efforts. She interacts regularly with trade associations and with national, regional and international standards developing organizations, and leads UL’s effort to negotiate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with standards organizations in developing countries. She is a tremendous advocate for international standardization, and can always be counted on as a crucial participant and leader even in the most challenging activities.

Among her long list of contributions in regional and international forums, Ms. Bird is a member of the Technical Management Committee (TMC) of the U.S. National Committee to the International Electrotechnical Commission (USNC), and chaired the TMC's Task Force on the Model Operating Procedures, which she successfully brought to conclusion. She also serves on the ANSI International Policy Committee and the ANSI Regional Steering Committee for the Americas. She is the Secretary of IEC Technical Committee 61, Household Appliances, and the U.S. TAG Administrator Secretary for IEC TC 69, Electric Vehicles. She represents UL on the ANSI Electric Vehicle Standards Panel (EVSP). And she serves on the Executive Committee of the Council for Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations of the Americas (CANENA), where she previously served as treasurer and then chair of the CANENA Audit Committee.

A member of SES – The Society for Standards Professionals since 2004, she recently began a two-year term as SES vice-president. She has also served on the SES Board of Directors as the membership director, and as SES Conference Committee chair and Membership Committee chair.
