ANSI Legal Issues Forum: Standardization and the Cannabis Industry | Overview

Although cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, 33 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis for medicinal use and 11 states have legalized recreational use. With the continued growth of the cannabis industry and increasing public and political support for broader legalization, there is a growing need for standardization activities that support public health and safety.

This year’s Legal Issues Forum will examine the legal implications, challenges, and opportunities for standards developing organizations and conformity assessment bodies in light of the shifting legal landscape. The forum will feature interactive panel discussions, including:

  • The Current and Evolving Legal Landscape: Clarifying the Rules and Regulations that Govern Cannabis Sales, Production, and Use in the U.S. – and the Implications for Standardization
This panel will focus on the legal aspects of the cannabis/hemp business, the federal Controlled Substance Act and the Money Laundering statutes, how these laws are evolving, and finally, how they have or might apply to standards and testing.
  • Standardization to Support Industry and Public Health and Safety: Current Standards and Conformity Assessment Activities Related to Cannabis/Hemp
This panel will feature speakers from standards developing organizations and testing labs that are currently conducting activities related to cannabis/hemp in keeping with the laws of their jurisdiction.
