Register by March 21: U.S.-German Standards Panel on Innovation in the Medical Device Sector

Registration reminder: The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) will co-host a standards panel event entitled "Innovation in the Medical Device Sector" on April 12, 2016, in Washington, D.C. The series of discussions is intended to unite public- and private-sector representatives from the United States and Germany to provide viewpoints on recent developments in electronic medical records and the implications for standardization and public policy.

Following welcoming remarks from Rudiger Marquardt of DIN's executive board and Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of ANSI, the event will feature the following moderated sessions:

  • Gordon Gillerman, director, National Institute of Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), will moderate a discussion of "Standards in the EU and U.S. - A Tool for Meeting Global Requirements," covering harmonized and recognized standards and current issues related to disposable medical products, among other issues.

  • Hermann Behrens, head of department innovation, DIN, will lead the session on "Interoperability in the Medical Device Sector," with expert dialogue on the internet of medical systems and IT services, medical robots, interoperability of devices in hospitals, and more.

  • Carol Herman, senior vice president, standards and policy programs, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), will steer discussion of "Innovative Future Topics," including standardization in the field of regenerative medicine, innovation and adaptation in the development of standards for absorbable implants, biocompatibility, and evolution of risk management in safety evaluation of medical devices, among other topics.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the FHI 360 Conference Center's Academy Hall (1825 Connecticut Ave., NW, 8th Flr.). ANSI members are invited to participate, and all interested stakeholders can sign up via the event registration page, now through March 21. A draft agenda is also available here.
