In particular, NIST sought public input on the effectiveness of federal engagement in standards activities supporting multi-disciplinary, emerging technologies addressing national priorities, including cybersecurity, Smart Grid, health information technology, and emergency communications interoperability.
The call for comment was issued on behalf of the National Science and Technology Council's Sub-committee on Standards (SOS), as part of a larger process aimed at improving the effectiveness of U.S. federal government participation in standardization activities. In total, NIST received 92 responses representing industry, government, standards setting organizations, the academic community, professional communities, nonprofit trade associations and interest groups, and individuals.
In its role as the coordinator of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) submitted a response on behalf of the standardization community. The response was informed by comments solicited and received from a broad cross-section of ANSI's membership, which includes industry, standards developers, government agencies, and conformity assessment bodies.
In addition to its summary document, NIST also published observations regarding the U.S. model of public-private cooperation in standards setting, the federal government's role in the process, and the contributions of standards to technological innovation, competitiveness, and trade.
