NIST Releases Study on Size of Fire-Fighting Crews for Residential Fires
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a landmark study indicating that the size of fire-fighting crews has a substantial effect on the fire service's ability to protect lives and property in residential fires.

The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland security (DHS), found that four-person fire-fighting crews were able to complete 22 essential fire-fighting and rescue tasks in a typical residential structure 30 percent faster than two-person crews and 25 percent faster than three-person crews.

For more information and to read the study, see the NIST release.

UL Publishes Paper for Manufacturers on Safety Standard IEC 62368-1

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a member and audited designator of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), released a white paper on a new International Standard: IEC 62368-1, Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment - Part 1: Safety requirements.

The standard, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), employs a new form of safety testing, Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE), which evaluates hazards that can be transferred to end users and how technology products safeguard against these potential dangers. UL produced the paper to educate manufacturers about this groundbreaking testing method.

For more information and to read the white paper, see the UL news item.

Upcoming ATIS Webinar to Address Move to LTE
ATIS, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is holding a free webinar on Long Term Evolution (LTE), a high-performance air interface for cellular telephones, and the recent releases from the Third Generation Partner Project (3GPP) that make LTE possible.

As networks evolve towards LTE, 3GPP, a collaboration of telecommunications associations and standards bodies, has continually introduced new features while simultaneously providing stable releases. This has enabled manufacturers to move into their production phase at the earliest and best opportunity.

During this Webinar, industry experts will discuss the impact of 3GPP's latest release and the progress made in 2009 and 2010, as well as plans for future releases. To learn more, see the ATIS webinar page.
