ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New Field of ISO Activity on Fireworks

4/14/2011
The Standards Administration of China (SAC) has submitted a proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for a new field of technical activity on fireworks. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by Friday, May 27, 2011.

The proposed activity would address fireworks quality control, definitions, terminology, classification, categorization, labeling, test methods, and basic safety requirements.

According to the proposal, a number of countries have developed their own national standards, but these do not address all aspects of fireworks and contain vast differences between them. International standardization in this area would lead to greater coherence in technical standards and safer use of fireworks by consumers. China, the proposal states, is willing and able to provide the Secretariat to the ISO Technical Committee (TC).

The proposed TC would be responsible for the planning of international standards in the field of fireworks, the establishment of an international standardization system, as well as the revision of existing international standards in the field of fireworks. The program of work would include:

  • terminology, classification, and categorization of fireworks
  • safety and quality requirements for fireworks and related test methods
  • design principles based on consumer safety, arts and crafts techniques, and pyrotechnic theories
  • service standards for fireworks, including sales, display, etc.
  • technical requirements for fireworks and test methods
  • labeling

All comments on the proposal should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy ([email protected]). Feedback received by the May 27 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.
