ISO Announces Call for Input on Planned Revision of ISO 22000 on Food Safety Management

5/08/2014
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is seeking input in connection with the possible revision of ISO 22000, Food safety management systems. As the U.S. representative to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages members of industry, representatives of government agencies, regulatory bodies, laboratories, or other stakeholders impacted by the standard to submit feedback regarding the possible revision.

ISO 22000, which was developed by ISO Technical Committee (TC) 34, Food products, Subcommittee (SC) 17, Management systems for food safety, and first published in 2005, is designed to assist organizations of all sizes in managing their food safety activities in a reliable, cost-effective manner. The International Standard includes governing principles, guidelines, and procedures for food safety management systems, as well as guidance on overseeing food safety as part of a single coherent process.

ISO standards are generally reviewed in five-year cycles to ensure that the contents of the documents are current and useful for users. ISO TC 34 SC 17 is currently scheduled to begin the revision process for ISO 22000 in September.

ISO is particularly interested in receiving feedback on the benefits and drawbacks of the current edition of ISO 22000 from stakeholder organizations associated with the global food chain that have referenced, implemented, or otherwise made use of this International Standard in connection with their work. In addition to general responses, respondents are asked to consider the following specific questions:

  • What do you like about the standard?
  • What aspects of the standard do you think need to be changed?
  • Did you have any problems implementing the standard?

All comments should be submitted by Friday, June 20, 2014 to ANSI at [email protected] and to ISO TC 34 SC 17 at [email protected].
