ANSI President and CEO S. Joe Bhatia Presides Over U.S.-China High-Level Cooperative Event

12/01/2016

On November 15, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) President and CEO S. Joe Bhatia served as emcee and panel moderator for the 2016 U.S. - China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) Digital Trade Cooperative Event. Mr. Bhatia leveraged ANSI's history of cooperation with China and role as coordinator of the U.S. standards system to ensure productive discussion between the U.S. and Chinese experts participating in the event.

The JCCT is an annual government-to-government dialogue between the U.S. and China that addresses commercial and trade issues between the two countries. The dialogue is co-chaired by the Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and China's Vice Premier responsible for trade and investment policy. The 2016 JCCT included cooperative events on digital trade and food safety. The outcomes for the 2016 JCCT are available here.

The Digital Trade Cooperative Event included opening remarks by USTR Michael Froman, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang. Following opening remarks, two panels were convened to discuss various aspects of digital trade ripe for U.S.-China commercial cooperation.

The first panel on the Internet of Things (IoT) included participation by IBM, GE Digital, China Mobile, and China Academy of ICT, and was moderated by the Alibaba Research Institute. The second panel focused on the role of standards in shaping the digital economy and included representation by the Information Technology Industry Council, the Object Management Group, the China Electronics Standardization Institute, and Nuctech Company. Mr. Bhatia moderated the panel and encouraged experts to touch on the importance of international standards, and the principles of openness, consensus, and relevance in the process of developing standards to facilitate the digital economy.
