ASHRAE Publishes GreenGuide for the iPad
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and accredited standards developer ASHRAE has published its first ever eBook for the Apple iPad.

The third and latest edition of the ASHRAE GreenGuide: The Design, Construction and Operation of Sustainable Buildings covers each stage of the building process, from planning and operation to facility maintenance.

"We want people to have access to ASHRAE guidance wherever they are, without having to carry around a hardback book," said Sheila Hayter, chair of the organization's Publishing and Education Council. "With the release of GreenGuide eBook, detailed information on the design of high performance buildings is as close as one keeps their iPad."

The GreenGuide eBook is available as a download in Apple's iBooks store and requires the iBooks app.

BIFMA and NSF Partner to Develop Product Category Rules for Furniture
ANSI members and accredited standards developers the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) International and NSF International (NSF) are partnering to develop product category rules for the furniture industry.

Product category rules define how to conduct a life cycle assessment for a particular product group and help to meet the growing demand for science-based support to verify environmental product claims and eliminate greenwashing. NSF's National Center for Sustainability Standards (NCSS) will serve as the program operator for developing the furniture product category rules.

BIFMA develops voluntary standards for the North American office and institutional furniture industry to support safe, healthy and sustainable environments. An independent, public health and safety organization, NSF's mission is to protect human health and the environment through standards development, inspection, testing, and certification for the food, water, build/construction, retail, consumer products, chemical and health science industries.

Stakeholders interested in the development of product category rules for furniture products should contact Minday Costello of NSF's NCSS ([email protected]) or BIFMA's Brad Miller ([email protected]).

SCTE Smart Energy Management Initiative Expanded to Include Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery
According to the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), an ANSI member and accredited standards developing organization, the scope of cable telecommunications' most comprehensive energy management program is being expanded to address the need to ensure the availability of power under adverse conditions.

At its semiannual SEMI (Smart Energy Management Initiative) Forum in early June, program members agreed to broaden the focus of the program beyond its initial goal of reducing energy consumption and expense. The expanded SEMI mission also will include emergency preparedness and disaster recovery planning that provide for continued operational readiness for both the network and its technical and operational workforces.

SEMI will identify needs for such disasters as earthquakes, fire, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes, as well as man-made events such as terror attacks and blackouts. In each case, benchmarks and strategies will be defined for preventing service interruption, rapid restoration of service, and ensuring the availability and safety of the workforce in adverse conditions.

Approval of TAG Accreditation
ANSI's Executive Standards Council (ExSC) has approved the accreditation of a new U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO Technical Committee (TC) 260, Human Resource Management, with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a full ANSI organizational member, serving as TAG Administrator.
