ANSI EESCC to Host August 28 Web Call to Begin Phase Two of Work Advancing Energy and Water Efficiency

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Energy Efficiency Standardization Coordination Collaborative (EESCC) is pleased to announce the beginning of the second phase of its work to bolster energy and water efficiency standardization in the built environment. This new phase of activity will build on the successful release of the EESCC’s landmark document, the Standardization Roadmap: Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment, by seeking action on the roadmap’s recommendations and supporting the development and use of standardization activities in this area.

ANSI EESCC Roadmap Reaching Wide-Ranging Audience
Following its release in June 2014, the EESCC Standardization Roadmap has been downloaded more than 1,200 times, reaching a broad audience of stakeholders representing energy efficiency–focused organizations, standards developers, educational institutions, companies, and international audiences who were not previously engaged with the collaborative. In addition, ISO Technical Committee (TC) 242, Energy Management, responded to the report by beginning work on a recommendation in the roadmap concerning methodology and identification of energy data formats and attributes [see related story].

To support opportunities to realize energy, water, and cost savings in the built environment, the EESCC roadmap sets down 125 recommendations across five inter-related areas of focus. The roadmap was developed with the participation of more than 50 member organizations and four federal agencies, involving over 160 experts from industry, standards developing organizations (SDOs), energy efficiency-focused organizations, educational institutions, and other groups.

The roadmap is available for free download online from; in addition, the supplemental EESCC Inventory Database, an online source of information on relevant standards, codes, guidelines, and conformity assessment programs, is also available as a free resource.

Groups working or intending to carry out standardization activities to close a standardization gap identified in the roadmap are asked to notify the EESCC by completing the online EESCC Standardization Action Form.

Open EESCC Web Call on August 28
On August 28, the EESCC will host its first-ever global web call to discuss and begin action on phase two activities. The call is open to individuals and organizations interested in learning more about the EESCC and becoming involved in phase two. To register, email with the subject line “August 28 EESCC web call” by 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26. The August 28 web call is scheduled to run from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET.

In phase two, the EESCC will turn its focus to pursuing action on the standardization gaps highlighted in the roadmap, and will work with groups and encourage collaborative efforts to ensure gaps are addressed. The EESCC will conduct outreach to educate policymakers and other stakeholders on the use of standards to address energy and water efficiency needs, and will liaise with U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Additionally, the collaborative plans to engage with research groups and academia to encourage action on research-related gaps.

As the EESCC moves into its second phase of work, Pete DeMarco, senior vice president of advocacy and research for the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), has been appointed as the collaborative’s facilitator/rapporteur, and will guide the collaborative’s work program. Mr. DeMarco previously co-chaired EESCC Working Group (WG) 1: Building energy and water performance and assessment standards during the collaborative’s first phase. Jim Kendzel, executive director and CEO of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) will assume the WG1 co-chair position in phase two. Benjamin Goldstein of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and John Tuccillo of Schneider Electric serve as the EESCC’s public and private co-chairs, respectively.
