Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

NFPA Webinars to Explore Foam Application and Fire Safety Education
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an ANSI member and audited designator, has two upcoming free webinars for interested stakeholders.

"Foam Application for High Hazard Flammable Train (HHFT) Fires" will be held on Tuesday, October 16 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. EDT. The webinar will cover foam usage information in HHFT fire incidents, which are low frequency, high consequence response scenarios that can lead to fuel flowing, pooling, saturating, and burning for days. Emergency responders, fire service, incident commanders, researchers, and fire protection engineers are encouraged to attend.

"Learn how to get the message across with NFPA's 2018 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year" will be held on Tuesday, November 13 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EDT. Attendees will hear from Denise Hynes, who earned this title by developing workshops, prop kits, and safety events using NFPA resources to educate people of all ages. The information presented may be of interest to firefighters, public educators, and emergency responders.

Visit NFPA's website to learn more and register for the webinars.

EMAP Webinar to Cover Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Consequence Analysis
The Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, will hold a free webinar on the hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) and consequence analysis standard area for the emergency management arena.

The one-hour webinar will be held on Wednesday, November 28 at 11:30 a.m. EST. Moderators will guide listeners through what EMPA is looking for in the analysis of risk, vulnerability, and consequences in this challenging topic.

TIA Releases Position Paper on Edge Data Centers
The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has published a new position paper on Edge Data Centers (EDCs), addressing considerations for development, implementation, and operational features.

"Building and scaling data centers closer to the edge of the network will be critical to meet the needs of new technology," said Harry Smeenk, TIA's vice president of program development. "TIA's Edge Data Center Working Group has been leading this thinking for over a year. We are pleased to provide companies with our initial guidelines to unlock the full potential of Edge Data Centers."

The paper compares requirements and considerations for EDCs to those for traditional data centers, covering planning, design, development, operations, and maintenance needs. It also provides definitions for eight new terms that will be added to the Linux Foundation's Open Glossary of Edge Computing.

See the TIA news item to learn more and read the full position paper.

CTA Podcast Discusses the Future of Self-Driving Cars
The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, delves into the future of self-driving technology in a recent episode of their podcast, CES Tech Talk.

The technology behind self-driving cars is advancing rapidly, and now policies are being created for the industry. Axios managing editor Kim Hart and Ford Autonomous Vehicles president and CEO Sherif Marakby weigh in on both the technology and the accompanying industry policies being developed.
