NIST and NFPA to Host Joint Webinar on New Technologies in Home Fire Prevention and Safety
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), both ANSI members, have teamed up with the Vision 20/20 Project to host a webinar on new cooking and smoke alarm technologies and how they can strengthen home fire prevention and safety.
The free webinar will be held on Thursday, August 23 at 2pm EST. Listeners will hear from Casey Grant (NFPA), Tom Cleary (NIST), and Anthony Hamins (NIST), with the discussion covering changes to new national standards on coil-top stoves; new technologies that may prevent fires on gas stove cook tops; and new requirements for smoke alarms that may minimize the likelihood of nuisance alarms.

OCEANIS Global Forum to Address Ethical Issues in Autonomous and Intelligent Systems
Eight organizations, including ANSI member and accredited standards developer IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), have come together to jointly launch a global forum focused on the development and use of standards as a means to address ethical matters surrounding autonomous and intelligent systems.
The Open Community for Ethics in Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (OCEANIS) will support broad collaboration between organizations to share information on their relevant initiatives and programs; further understanding of standards' role in furthering innovation; and identify opportunities for initiatives that strengthen the development and use of standards that address ethical issues in technology advancement.
"IEEE-SA's initiative in the establishment of OCEANIS aligns with IEEE's tagline and with the rationale behind IEEE's Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems," said Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director for IEEE-SA. "We are convinced that the complex ethical issues emerging in the development and deployment of such systems can only be addressed through processes that correspond to the envisioned principles, not through agreements behind closed doors. IEEE has already initiated an entirely new series of standardization projects open to any interested person and carried out through our rules-based and transparent process."

AHAM Video Informs on Counterfeit Filters
A new video developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, provides consumers with an overview of what would happen if you receive a counterfeit water filter.
The video begins by listing ways that a counterfeit filter may look or feel different, such as having a different weight, lettering, or color than filters previously used. Viewers will also learn about the ways that counterfeit filters can be harmful, such as by failing testing requirements for lead set by national standards, or failing to remove contaminants like pesticides or arsenic.

TIA Podcast Discusses Next Generation 9-1-1
The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has produced a podcast introducing "Next Generation 9-1-1" (NG911) - an emergency network that takes advantage of smart devices and our advanced network.
"Next Generation 9-1-1: What It Is and How We Get There" features Craig Dollar, director of NG9-1-1 strategy at Motorola Solutions and Patrick Halley, executive director of the NG9-1-1 Institute, along with TIA's Dan Henry. The 40-minute podcast is available free of charge.
