ANSI Leadership Visits China for ANSI-SAC Industry Roundtable on Enterprise Standards and High-Level Outreach Meetings

08/14/2018

President and CEO of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) S. Joe Bhatia led a delegation to China on July 17-19, 2018. ANSI's senior leadership regularly visits China, reflecting the Institute's strong relationship with the nation and the volume of activities carried out under ANSI's China Program. Outreach trips are essential in maintaining integral relationships that facilitate member initiatives. The ANSI delegation included ANSI Board members from Corning and Deere & Company.

The roundtable was the third in a series of events that ANSI has organized with the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) in the past year, following an industry roundtable on U.S.-China strategic cooperation during Dr. Tian's visit to Washington, DC, in June 2017, and the inaugural ANSI-SAC International Seminar on Association Standards in December 2017.

Among the events, an industry roundtable on enterprise standards, held in Hangzhou on July 17, provided an opportunity and platform for ANSI members to raise their concerns on enterprise standards to SAC directly, and hear from representatives from Chinese industry on their experiences dealing with the disclosure of enterprise standards. It also provided U.S. companies with the opportunity to reinforce the need for clear guidelines on the implementation of China’s revised Standardization Law, which entered into force on January 1, 2018, and a better understanding on how the law would impact foreign companies operating in China.

Experts exchanged perspectives on the differences between the U.S. and Chinese standardization systems and suggested next steps for China to take as it moves forward in its standardization reform process. Presentations and pictures from the event are available on ANSI's Sharepoint.

The roundtable was well-received, with over 100 participants, including representatives from the U.S. Embassy, 11 representatives from ANSI member organizations, SAC and Chinese National Institution for Standardization (CNIS) leadership, various Chinese industry associations, and academia. Vice Minister of State Administration for Market Regulation and SAC Administrator Dr. Tian Shihong made opening remarks alongside Mr. Bhatia and U.S. Embassy Commercial Counsellor Cynthia Griffin.

The roundtable was warmly received by the Party Secretary of Hangzhou, Zhou Jiangyong, who hosted a dinner in honor of Mr. Bhatia. The local government website featured the dinner the next day.

ANSI and SAC also met bilaterally after the roundtable discussion, in which they discussed further opportunities for cooperation, including hosting a similar event when Dr. Tian visits Washington, DC, in 2019. Other issues discussed include cooperation at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and government-unique standards. Both issues were also discussed when Mr. Bhatia met CNIS President Liu Hongsheng in Beijing.
