People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an accredited standards developer and member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has appointed Gerry Coons as vice president of industry affairs. He will oversee OPEI's ANSI and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards work, and manage regulatory relationships with the Environmental Protection Association, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the California Air Resources Board, and Health Canada and Canadian Provincial Authorities.

A 30-year outdoor power equipment (OPE) industry veteran and engineer, Mr. Coons most recently served as general manager at the Husqvarna production facility in Orangeburg, SC. He holds an MBA degree.

OPEI is an international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers in the engine, utility vehicle, and landscape, lawn, garden, and forestry equipment industries. Its mission is to bring awareness to the importance of environmental stewardship, an appreciation of the outdoors, and how to grow, restore, and maintain everyday green spaces in a responsible way.


ANSI organizational member the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) has announced the appointment of Robert Burns, Ph.D., as vice president, health and nutrition policy, as of November 14.

Dr. Burns most recently was the owner of Nutrition Implications, LLC, a consulting business that helped food organizations and companies develop strategic approaches to nutrition and health. Previously, he held leadership roles at Cadbury Schweppes and Mead Johnson, where he worked to develop and execute nutrition and wellness strategies.

A recognized leader in the nutrition community, Dr. Burns has authored numerous consumer education articles and peer-reviewed scientific publications. Most recently, he co-authored articles in the Journal of Food Science and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association on the topic of translating the federal government's 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans into real behavior change. He holds a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry and a B.S. in biochemistry from Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
