DOE Requests Input on R&D Practices for Reduced Energy Consumption in Buildings
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Office (BTO) has released a request for information (RFI) on the topic of R&D approaches for reducing the energy consumption of miscellaneous electric loads (MELs) in residential and commercial building. BTO is particularly interested in feedback on potential strategies and specific technical performance and cost metrics and targets used to evaluate R&D approaches.

Input from ANSI members and other relevant stakeholders is requested by the DOE’s October 3, 2016, deadline. Further details and the full text of the RFI are available here.

TIA Premieres Documentary on Connectivity Challenges for the Internet of Things
The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, recently premiered a documentary on the challenges, opportunities, and issues of connectivity as it relates to the internet of things (IoT). IoT is the internetworking of buildings, vehicles, and other physical items that are embedded with electronics and sensors, allowing them to collect and exchange data.

“The Internet of Things: Connecting it All” examines the communications ecosystem as it will face up to 30 billion connected devices in the coming years. Executives from leading companies including Verizon, Cisco, Telit, and SAP weigh in on the IoT questions that businesses face, providing guidance on how to leverage this transformation of the communication ecosystem.

ASLA Guide Advises on Resilient Landscape Design
The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), an ANSI member, has published a free online guide that outlines how resilient landscape planning and design can protect communities from natural disasters.

Resilient landscape planning and design retrofits communities in a way that allows them to recover more quickly from extreme events such as drought, fire, and flooding. Readers will learn how resilient design works with nature through the use of adaptive and multi-layered systems to provide value to communities. For example, urban forests integrated into a city clean the air while reducing the urban heat island effect. The guide contains both small- and large-scale solutions, and outlines the landscape architect’s role in designing resilient systems.

Access the guide through the ASLA news item.

ASB Webinar to Outline Experimental Baking for Bread Dough Systems
The American Society of Baking, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is holding a free webinar on experimental baking for yeast-leavened bread dough systems.

“Key Concepts in Controlled Test Baking and Fundamentals of Bread Dough Systems” will explore experimental baking in a lab layout, with attention to sponge and dough, straight dough, and no-time dough. Viewers will learn about the systems of these experiments, from materials to processing, and the evaluation of the final product.

The webinar will be held on September 29 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm EDT. See the ASB website to register.
