People on the Move

1/17/2014
People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member and audited designator, recently announced the promotion of Dave Viola to the position of senior vice president of business strategy and chief operating officer (COO), and the hiring of Lee Mercer to serve as its senior vice president of industry relations and business development.

Before joining IAPMO in 2007, Mr. Viola worked as the technical director for Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI), then known as the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute, where he oversaw activities related to training, product standards, plumbing codes, and product certification. He also worked as a staff engineer for BOCA International and as a senior engineer for ANSI member and accredited standards developer the International Code Council (ICC). Mr. Viola, who was previously IAPMO's senior director of technical services, earned his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Northern Illinois University. He is currently a member of the ANSI Accreditation Committee for Product Certifiers (ACC).

Prior to his hiring by IAPMO, Mr. Mercer worked for more than 30 years at Moen Incorporated, a leading manufacturer of faucets and other related fixtures, where he rose to the position of director - product compliance. During that tenure, Mr. Mercer also served as PMI's president and as a board member; he is a 2013 recipient of the PMI President's Award, honoring him for his contributions to the greater plumbing industry.

IAPMO was formed in 1936 to protect public health and safety by working with government and industry on the implementation of comprehensive plumbing and mechanical systems around the world.
