Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Professional Services Sustainability to Lighting Fixtures Cybersecurity

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Sustainability Guidelines for Professional Services Companies
The use of sustainable practices is of critical importance in every industry, highlighting the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a business’s operations. A new standard by NSF International guides sustainability for professional services providers, an industry characterized as those with low capital intensity, high knowledge intensity, and a professionalized workforce. NSF 391.1-2019, General Sustainability Assessment Criteria for Professional Services, takes a holistic view of a professional services company’s business practices, offering criteria for evaluating the impacts of these providers. Organizations can use the standard to improve the environmental, social, economic, and supply chain performance of their businesses in measured and documented ways.

An ANSI member and audited designator, NSF International writes public health standards and protocols and tests, and certifies products for the water, food, and consumer goods industries.

Cybersecurity for Parking Lot Lighting Fixtures
Today's lighting systems employ sophisticated technology which allow for greater control and more flexibility than a simple wall switch can provide. These complex systems can connect to networks for communication outside the building, providing improved energy and operational efficiency but also opening them up to the risk of a cyber attack. ANSI C137.2-2019, Cybersecurity Requirements for Lighting Systems - Parking Lots, is a new standard for these advanced lighting systems, developed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). The document provides cybersecurity requirements for lighting systems used in parking lots with public access.

NEMA, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, represents nearly 325 electrical, medical imaging, and radiation therapy manufacturers at the forefront of electrical safety, reliability, resilience, efficiency, and energy security.
