ANSI and NIST to Host World Standards Day Hill Event on How Standards Impact Infrastructure Solutions

5/24/2018

Event to Highlight How Standards are Tools for Innovative Infrastructure Solutions

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) together with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will host a World Standards Day 2018 Hill Event focused on the theme, "Standards: Important Tools for Innovative Infrastructure Solutions," from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, at the Rayburn House Office Building Room 2226, in Washington DC.

Expert discussions will reveal how codes and standards play a significant role in supporting strong, practicable, and resilient 21st century infrastructure solutions. The event is part High Performance Building Week 2018.

As billions of dollars are invested to improve and maintain our built environment, technically robust standards that reflect the contributions of a wide range of interested experts contribute to the success of both public and privately funded projects. Moreover, standards are designed to be continuously monitored and updated, thus supporting the quality and performance that can provide good returns on infrastructure investment.

These solutions include not only incorporating new technologies - such as 3D printing - into codes and standards, but also recognizing the value of hazard mitigation strategies in assuring that infrastructure and buildings are built to withstand future events. Building owners, designers, and governments rely on codes and standards to provide a consistent basis for assuring that mitigation measures achieve the desired level of protection.

The expert speakers to share their insights will include:

- GP Russ Chaney, Chief Executive Officer, the IAPMO Group, and Chairman of the Board, ANSI

- Bryan Soukup, Executive Director, Alliance for National and Community Resilience and Director, Resilience Initiatives for ICC

- Ryan M. Colker, JD, Vice President, National Institute of Building Sciences

- Dr. Clarissa Ferraris, Leader, Inorganic Materials Group, NIST

- Martina T. Driscoll, P.E. of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. will be presenting on behalf of ASTM International

Please register online at hpbccc.squarespace.com/events/ or see the event flyer. Brown bag lunches will be available.

About World Standards Day

World Standards Day was initially launched in 1970, and is now celebrated by nations around the globe. U.S. activities are organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from the standards and conformity assessment community. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will serve as the event's 2018 administrating organization, in honor of its 100-year anniversary.

The event is co-chaired each year by ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
