ASSP Publishes Steps for Creating Safer Roadway Work Zones
The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, offers stakeholders a list of four steps that improve highway work zone safety.

The tips are:

  • Develop a traffic control plan based on an understanding of the regular traffic flow of the area, and including advance warning and transition areas
  • Implement protective safety measures such as a barrier between motorists and workers, electronic signage, and rumble strips
  • Improve worker visibility with high-visibility safety apparel, illumination plans for night work, and specific positions for flaggers
  • Use intrusion alert technologies so that workers have time to react and get to safety, with alarms or alerts that reduce injuries and fatalities
