ANSI's Roy Swift Participates in Workshop on Allied Health Workforce
Dr. Roy Swift, senior director of personnel credentialing accreditation programs at the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), participated as a panelist at an event of the Institute of Medicine examining workforce strategies to improve access to allied health services, particularly for underserved and rural populations.
Held May 9-10 in Washington, DC, the Workshop on the Allied Health Workforce and Services explored how policy makers, state and federal governments, and allied health care providers can improve regulations and the structure of allied health care delivery to increase access to care.

SAE and IEEE to Collaborate on Vehicle-to-Smart-Grid Standards
ANSI members and accredited standards developers SAE International and the IEEE Standards Organization (IEEE-SA) have announced a strategic partnership to develop vehicle-to-Smart-Grid standards. The collaboration seeks to advance the development and use of vehicular technology so that the industry can move forward faster.
"Our stakeholders have keen interest in the Smart Grid because it's the infrastructure needed to recharge hybrid and electric vehicles," said Jack Pokrzywa, director of global ground vehicle standards with SAE International.
SAE has developed 46 standards relating to electric vehicle technology and is currently developing more than 30 more. IEEE has more than 100 Smart Grid standards in development, including twenty named in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards.
"By establishing an environment for closer collaboration . . . IEEE-SA and SAE International will be able to more quickly roll out better standards," said Judith Gorman, managing director, IEEE Standards Association. "And that translates into faster realization of the revolution that the Smart Grid promises in terms of production, delivery, and use of electricity for industry and consumers alike worldwide."

A June 8 SES Webinar to Explore Delivering Product Standards
SES - the Society for Standards Professionals invites interested parties to participate in its upcoming webinar, Delivering Product Standards Data in Multiple Forms to Multiple Platforms. To be held June 8, 2011, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. EDT, the webinar will feature speaker Ross Downing, principal engineer at the Boeing Company.
Product standards data represents a significant portion of the product definition data (PDD) for manufactured products. According to SES, managing product standards as digital data enables interoperability with other system, but creates new challenges. During the workshop, Mr. Downing will discuss how Boeing is executing a strategy to implement and maintain a single source product standards system.

A TIA Announces Call for Toy Donations to Comfort Children Affected by Tornado Disaster
In late April, the worst tornado disaster in the nation since 1925 took its toll on the South, claiming more than 300 lives and displacing hundreds more. Among the victims are countless children who witnessed the devastating destruction of their towns and homes. The Toy Industry Foundation (TIF), the philanthropic arm of ANSI member the Toy Industry Association, is asking for support to help bring comfort to these young victims by providing them with a sense of normalcy as their families begin rebuilding their lives.
Toys, games, books, and other playthings donated to the Toy Bank will be distributed in partnership with Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) to disaster relief agencies in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, and Tennessee.

A World Standards Day 2011 Poster Competition Extended to May 20
The World Standards Cooperation (WSC) has extended the deadline to submit entries to the World Standards Day 2011 poster competition to May 20, 2011. The theme of the competition is "International Standards - Creating confidence globally."
Finalists will be chosen by representatives of the WSC - a cooperative alliance of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Shortlisted entries will be published on the WSC website, and the general public will vote for the winning designs. For competition details, visit the WSC website.
