Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Industrial Robots to Zinc Orthophosphate

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Industrial Robots
Industrial robots are designed in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and configurations to perform precise applications – often at high speeds – including welding, spraying, assembly, packaging, material handling, and numerous others tasks. Workers interacting with industrial robots are at risk of collision, crushing, or other accidents connected to human, mechanical, or power system failures.

To ensure the safety of workers, the Robotics Industry Association (RIA) has published ANSI/RIA R15.06-2012, Industrial Robots and Robot Systems – Safety Requirements. This American National Standard (ANS) specifies requirements and guidelines for the safe design, protective measures, and information for use of industrial robots. It describes basic hazards associated with robots and provides requirements to eliminate or adequately reduce the risks connected with these hazards. ANSI/RIA R15.06-2012 outlines a collaborative operation, where a worker directly loads, unloads, or manually drives a given robotic during the automatic robot operation. The ANS also addresses safety-rated soft axis and space limiting technology used to control the robot motion so that restricted space can be more flexibly designed.

ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer RIA is the only trade group in North America organized specifically to serve the robotics industry. Members include leading robot manufacturers, users, system integrators, component suppliers, research groups, and consulting firms.

Zinc Orthophosphate
Zinc orthophosphate (ZOP) is used to create a microscopic film on metal surfaces that acts as a barrier, minimizing or eliminating corrosion caused by water. ZOP plays a critical role in reducing the release of iron, lead, and copper from piping systems into the water we drink.

To provide guidance for use of ZOP by the water service industry, ANSI/AWWA B506-2013, Zinc Orthophosphate, was recently released by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). The new document revises the 2006 edition of the ANS and describes ZOP corrosion inhibitor in dry and liquid forms for use in water supply services. The purpose of ANSI/AWWA B506-2013 is to provide minimum requirements for ZOP, including physical, chemical, packaging, shipping, and testing requirements. ANSI/AWWA B506-2013 can be referenced in specifications for purchasing and receiving ZOP, and can be used as a guide for testing the physical and chemical properties of ZOP samples.
