Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

New Jersey Adopts National Standard Plumbing Code Published by IAPMO
The New Jersey State Division of Codes and Standards has adopted the 2018 edition of the National Standards Plumbing Code (NSPC) published by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), an ANSI member and audited designator.

The NSPC outlines updated information on common materials, fixtures, devices, and equipment systems used or installed in plumbing systems. Valuable as both an enforcement and training tool, the code contains illustrations and supplementary notes to guide its users. Several state-specific amendments apply to NSPC's adoption by New Jersey, and IAPMO will offer a separate book that includes these amendments in the body of the text.

In 2017, IAPMO and the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors - National Association (PHCC) agreed to transfer ownership of all editions of the NSPC to IAPMO.

ASTM Video Highlights Women in Standards
ASTM International, an ANSI member and audited designator, has released a new video that highlights the roles of several women active in the standards community.

The video, debuted during an event with the Philadelphia Chapter of the Society of Women's Environmental Professionals, features four women who play key roles in technical committees:

  • Teresa Alleman, U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory
  • Laura Woodburn, Hersheypark
  • Elena Messina, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Yong-Li McFarland, Southwest Research Institute

ASTM President Katharine Morgan discusses the importance of diversity in standards development with the women in the video, which can be viewed on ASTM's YouTube channel.

MHI Launches Two New Subject-Specific Blogs

This new information and news resource, intended for manufacturing and supply chain professionals, is a collaborative effort of the Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS), Automated/Storage Retrieval Systems (ASRS), Conveyor and Sortation Systems (CSS), Solutions Community, and The Robotics Group (TRG) of MHI.

The Overhead Lifting Blog delivers information on overhead lifting solutions, which improve efficiency, productivity, and safety while reducing environmental impact. Manufacturing and supply chain professionals can learn about the latest trends in the space, with content provided by the MHI Overhead Alliance.

Both blogs offer monthly newsletters. Learn more and access Warehouse Automation Blog and Overhead Lifting Blog on MHI's website.

EPA Marks SepticSmart Week with Webcasts, Technical Resources, and Promotional Materials
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is marking this year's SepticSmart Week, held September 16-20, by encouraging homeowners, wastewater professionals, and local and state officials to design and maintain effective systems with the help of resources and outreach tools that provide information on septic systems.

Effective septic systems protect public health, preserve valuable water resources, and sustain economic vitality for communities. The EPA offers the following tips to maintain septic systems:

  • Keep grease, fats, coffee grounds, harmful chemicals, and hair out of the drain
  • Do not flush non-degradable materials such as diapers, wipes, hair, or hygiene products
  • If you are having many house guests, stagger use of water-based appliances to reduce the risk of septic system failure

View webcasts, learn how to care for septic systems, and make emergency plans for a septic system failure on the EPA's SepticSmart Week website.
